Positions and their roles in netball |
The red goal shooter's role is to score goals, help the red goal attack and get rebound shots. The red shooter is only allowed in the top third of the netball court. Most of the time is spent in the goal circle, breaking from the goal keeper and creating space to catch the ball and to shoot. The goal shooter works very closely with the goal attack and passes the ball off to the goal attack if they are on a better position to score a goal. A Goal Shooter needs to be able to execute short sharp movements to break free from the goal defence and have good shooting and rebounding skills |

| The red goal attack is allowed in the top two thirds of the court as we look at it. Their role is to help the centre (C) and the wing attack (WA) get the ball down to the goal circle, score goals, pass to the goal shooter (GS) if they are in a better position, and to get rebounds from any missed shots. Once again it is important to play as a team and to pass off to a player in a better position. Goal attack does not go down towards the defensive bottom third of the court very often. The Goal Attack also defends the blue goal defence (GD). | |

| The red wing attack is very important at the centre pass, normally gets the centre pass from the centre (C), attacks towards and up to the edge of the top goal circle, but is not allowed inside the circle. They are allowed in the attacking goal third and the centre third (but not in the goal circle). There is a lot of passing and catching between the wing attack (WA), centre (C), goal attack (GA), goal shooter (GS) when the red team is attacking the top goal.. Sometimes the wing attack will also receive the ball from the red wing defence (WD) and/or the red goal defence (GD). In defence, the Wing Attack must defend the blue team's Wing Defence (WD). | |

| The red centre takes the centre pass and provides the link between the attacking and defending players. The red centre (C) is allowed to play in all the court except the two scoring circles at the bottom and top of the court. Centre basically passes and catches the ball from all players on the team and the role is to help the defence, and then with the assistance of the wing attack (WA), goal attack (GA) get the ball towards the top circle. | |

| The red wing defence role is to stop the blue wing attack (WA) getting the ball and if they have the ball try to stop them passing to the blue attacking players in goal scoring positions. That means that they must stay very close to the blue wing attack whenever the blue team has the ball. The red wing attack is allowed in the bottom two thirds of the court above except the actual bottom goal circle. When the red goal goal keeper has the ball the red wing defence works towards the edge of the bottom circle breaks from their blue wing attack (WA), gets the ball and then starts the attack by passing to either the red centre (C), red wing attack (WA), or even the red goal attack (GA). | |

| The red goal defence role is to stop the ball getting to the blue goal attack (GA). They must stay very close to this player at all times when the blue team has the ball. The red goal defence is allowed in all parts of the bottom two thirds of the court above. In defence the red goal defence must defend the shot when the blue goal attack (GA) is shooting. They must also rebound any missed shots and help the goalkeeper defend the goal. There is a lot of teamwork required between goal defence and the red goalkeeper (GK). The goal defence must also break from their blue player, receive the ball from the blue goal keeper, then pass the ball to the blue centre (C), blue wing attack (WA), wing defence (WD), or even the goal attack (GA) or wing attack (WA). | |

| The red goal keeper's role is to stop the ball getting to the blue goal shooter. They must mark this player very closely. They must remain in the bottom third of the court above, although they normally spend most of the time in the actual bottom goal circle. The red goal shooter also rebounds missed shots and takes throw ins from the back. There is a lot of passing to the red goal defence, and when the red team has the ball they must break from their blue goal shooter, receive the ball and then pass to the red wing defence (WD), goal defence (GD) and centre (C) The Goal Keeper must be able to to anticipate the movements of the blue Goal Shooter (GS) at all times. | |
